What Is Social Security Disability Benefits?

Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) is one of the programs the Social Security Administration utilizes to pay disability benefits to the disabled and certain family members if “insured”. Typically, this is shown when you have paid in a significant amount of Social Security taxes on earnings.  If you are unsure if you have enough work credits,  you should contact your local Social Security Administration’s field office.

Do I Qualify For SSDI Benefits?

You may be eligible to receive Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits if you meet the following requirements:

  • you have long enough and recent enough in jobs covered by Social Security (i.e., work credits)
  • your medical condition meets Social Security’s strict definition of disability (i.e., disability)

How Do I Know If I Am Disabled?

To qualify under Social Security’s rules, the following must be true:

  • you cannot engage in work that is substantial gainful activity (SGA) because of your medical condition;
  • you cannot do work you previously did or adjust to other work because of your medical condition;
  • your medical condition has lasted or is expected to last for at least one (1) year or to result in death.

The definition of disability under the Social Security Act is different from other programs.  Social Security only pays for total disability.  No benefits are payable for partial disability or for short-term disability.

What Should I Do If I Have Been Denied SSDI Benefits?
